11/24/08

I woke up this morning and the power was out. It had gone out earlier in the night around 1:30AM but came back on within about five minutes. At 5AM it went out but didn't come back on. I went outside to make my way over to the generator room and it was still dark outside but starting to lighten up. It was terribly windy. I think it was the windiest it has been all year. All the trees were being whipped around and were swaying. As I got to the generator room I noticed that no one was inside and hadn't been there yet since the alarm was still beeping. The first thing someone does when they go in that room is shut the alarm off so I knew I was the first there. It was a good feeling to know since that meant that no one had been working on it and had failed to get it to restart. Fortunately, John showed up a little later and turned it back on. There aren't too many worries with the generator going out anymore since the boat did arrive a couple weeks back and we now have the new generator. The room holds two generators, so we are running one for 12 hours and then switching to the other. The good news is that if one goes down, then we have a backup to rely on.

As for the rest of the day, there were a few students late to school this morning. Whenever the weather changes (especially when it rains) it seems to slow down the process of getting to school. To me, it felt great to have cooler weather, however all of the students show up wearing sweatshirts and jackets whenever the temperature dips below 80 degrees. The entire day was very windy and we had to keep all of the windows closed otherwise papers would get blown around. Periodically, we would get gusts of wind that were blowing so hard that it kept distracting all the students as they would all turn to look outside to see what was going on. The wind didn't seem to let up all day and kept going into the evening.
