10/23/08

Today was the second day of tutoring Lindsay. She seems much more comfortable meeting than she did the first day. I think she may have been shy on top of still being fairly new to Sonlight. We first spent some time going over some review from the last meeting with some more complicated fill in the blank addition/subtraction problems such as 116 - _____ = 87. Sometimes these problems are a little tricky at first but once they understand the order in which they must solve the problem, everything else seems pretty easy for them. I am sure with just a few repeats, Lindsay will be able to master these. After the review, I planned on going over some multiplication flash cards with her. Emily, the fourth grade teacher, also met me after school to help work with her. I first pulled out the lower level multiplication cards and Emily worked with her on those. From here, we’ll work with her and progress slowly forward until she is very quick with them and then move on from there.

Later today, after school, I had a review for the Advanced Math and Geometry tests from about 3:30 until 6:30 PM. I had originally told them to show up at 3:00PM, but we didn’t get started on time because I was helping a few 6th graders in the front of the school at the picnic table. During 6th grade today, I was walking around the class checking to see if anyone had questions on the practice work. As I got to the back, Gerdeley handed me a folded piece of paper. She had written that she wanted me to help her with her rounding after school. She also wanted to know if I had a DVD player that she could borrow that night. The kids here are so funny. Well, I didn’t have a DVD player for her, but I did see her and Farah after school as normal sitting at the picnic table so I helped them with their questions. Speaking of 6th graders, below is a picture of the class. (click the picture to see the full size!)

At about 3:30PM I finally made my way up to my class to get started with the review. It was encouraging to know that all but one student showed up from my Advanced Math class to go over the material. After the Advanced Math review, I spent time with the seniors going over questions they had regarding the second chapter of their text books which was what we were covering for the test.
