11/07/08

Today I handed out the freshmen’s report cards at the end of class. Since I have them for my last period, I get to pass them out. I told them that they needed to be absolutely silent all hour or they wouldn’t get them. I usually have a little more trouble with them talking than any other grade, but today I could have heard a pin drop. Some of the students, especially Marc C., were itching to get them. Marc is always asking for his grade after tests and couldn’t wait to get his report card. When I walked into the class at 1:20PM I noticed that he was standing up front of the classroom instructing them to all be quiet. I about lost it because this student always has me cracking up. He cannot sit still with all the excitement he has. He does pretty good and is getting a 93% at the moment, but I heard from one of the other teachers that if he ever gets a lower grade that he seems as if he was just shot.

It’s hard to write about the students here, because I never feel like I can express how great they are. It is such a privilege to get to work with them and to get to know them. More and more I wish that those of you who are reading this would try to find a week within the next year to come down and visit. I cannot explain how much you would enjoy your time here especially after having a week of getting to know some of the students, the Haitian teachers, teacher’s aides, and some of the employees that work with Roger on the construction site. They are incredible people.
