7th Day (08/25/08)

Today we had another meeting/orientation which was very helpful in mentally preparing for teaching. I worked on Advanced Math and continued preparing for this class. I also found out today how our water reservoir works. It can be filled by two means. One, we can drag a hose over here from the well and turn it on for several hours until it is full. If we do this, the water feels like soft water as the well pulls in a little salt since we are so close to the ocean. The other method is a bit disgusting, though “natural”. If you take a look at the reservoir, there is a PVC pipe that runs from the roof of our house down the wall and dumps right into the tank. As you can imagine, and as I envision it, the water coming off that roof in the beginning of a storm is just nasty. Now, please don’t take this as a complaint. I understand that it is quite a luxury to have running water and I do appreciate it. Countless numbers of Haitians bathe and wash their closes in streams and rivers that are far from being clear. It’s just one of the systems I find interesting and something that I would like to improve on so if you have any ideas, please let me know!

Later this evening, we had dinner at Jerry’s hotel. Jerry owns the Holiday Beach Hotel which is where we stay each year that I have come on short term visits. Most of the food was similar to what we have in the states, with the exception of Goat, and the spices they use to cook were different and made the dinner very enjoyable.
