11/13/08

We continued teaching today without power, but as I said, it isn’t that big of a deal. I was just glad that we had power for most of the prior week. Last week someone was here who is a dental hygienist in the States. She came here to spend all week cleaning our students’ teeth. I had known of a small room we have in the school where dentists, nurses/doctors, and optometrists tend to hang out when they are here, but never looked inside until recently. It is a very small room and can get quite warm since it isn’t air-conditioned, but other than that it is set up pretty nicely. We have a dentist chair for the students to sit in and we also have one of those overhead lights for dentists to use. As for optometrists, we have a phoroptor (it’s either that or a refractor - the staple instrument you always see in an eye exam room). Well, the dental hygienist brought in a lot of supplies and spent her time working on one student at a time. It is amazing that we have enough volunteers to come down to do these specialized jobs for our students who wouldn’t typically get this type of care.
