01/11/09

Today is the start of our first full week since we returned from the States and it feels great to be back into the rhythm. It has been fun being back for a couple reasons. The obvious is that it is great to see the students again. They have already had me laughing many times over. One of my freshman students, Yvory (pronounced eve oree), is the type of person that cracks himself up. Sometimes I don't even know what he is talking about but I'll just look at him and start laughing because he has himself laughing hysterically. I mean, he'll start laughing so hard I think he is going to end up on the floor with a cramp.

This week as well as last Thursday and Friday I have given out candy to the 6th graders. I didn't know that I would be teaching 6th grade math when I came down so I hadn't sent anything down for them. I didn't bring any candy, stickers or gifts of any kind for them. So, before I went home for Christmas, I asked them what they wanted me to bring back. Most of them wanted candy so I decided to bring home a bunch of crazy candy that my brother and I used to like when we were kids. I just happened to be at the mall with my brother when I was home and we went past a candy store where I found a bunch of candy we always had. I bought Cry Babies, Zots, and Air Heads. I guess Air Heads aren't that bizarre but I knew they would like the Cry Babies (very sour gumballs) and the Zots (candy that has a fizzing center). I gave them the Zots first and they didn't know what to make of them. Many of the students had the strangest faces and were taking the candy back out of their mouth to look at it. Some were taking the part that was fizzing and wiping it with their fingers. Some were telling me that it was fizzing and I said that this is exactly why my brother and I liked them! The next thing I gave them were Cry Babies. When I passed out the gumballs I told them that they had to take them out of the wrappers and put them on their desk until everyone had opened them. Once they all had them out of the wrappers I had them all try the gum at once so I could see their reaction all at once. Some of them didn't seem stunned at all while others immediately took the gum back out of their mouth and held it pinched between their little fingers. There were a few who didn't put the gum back into their mouth until they had licked all the sour coating off. Just the way the kids act when they try new things makes me want to bring back even more next time.

I think you forgot to mention that one of the reasons you are so happy to be back is the warm weather :) haha
