09/11/08

Today we learned that we are going to have to conserve diesel fuel and that the power will be off from about 8:00AM – 11:00AM and then again from 2:00PM – 5:30PM. Hopefully, this will stretch the diesel.

After school a few of us decided to go on a hike. The hike that we went on was about the same hike that I had gone on when I was here last October so not too much was new but it is always a lot of fun! This time I brought a container full of grapefruit seeds. Each time we get grapefruits downtown we save the seeds. When we went on a walk, I along with my friend Emily were throwing seeds out wherever there was a spot where erosion was a problem. Our thought was that if they had more trees, they would have less erosion along with a little more fruit to eat once the trees grow. I think I might make it a habit when I take hikes. I just make sure that I don’t toss them where people are farming, or by their homes.

By the way, the grapefruit here is strange. They don’t turn yellow or yellowish/pink. When we get them, they are green which is the state they are in when they are ripe. I don’t like them quite as much, but then I don’t have much of a choice! They do make for a great juice though when mixed with other fruits.

After the hike, when we got back, I noticed the power wasn’t on yet. We didn’t get power until 8PM, so I sat at the dining table with about four candles and graded papers. That was quite a challenge because we were fighting for candles since there are only a few.
