Everything went well in my classes today. It wasn’t too much different, but there were a few things that stuck out.
For starters, all of the students at Sonlight Academy are required to wear uniforms. The uniforms for boys are navy pants (shorts if they are younger) and a white dress shirt. For the girls, they are to wear navy skirts with a white top. I just learned that each year the high school students get together and decide on something consistent. For example, this year, all the girls decided to add a tie to their outfits. Because of this, today I was asked by a few girls if I could tie their tie for them. I have a hard time tying a tie on someone else so I have to tie it around my neck and then take it off (which is difficult working with a small tie) and then give it to them. They just laugh when I do this, but they keep coming back.
As for 6th grade… as I said, they are crazy about math and getting answers right. Today I was working on the white board doing a problem from the book. When I finished, I asked the students if they had gotten it right. Before I could turn around, I heard someone say, “I’m a math machine!” I asked them, “Who is a math machine?” and then Ally, one of the boys who sits up front, said, “I am” which was quickly followed by his friend, Freuddensky (who goes by Freud: pronounced Fred) who said “I am, I am” and a bunch of giggles. So, I began quizzing those two asking what 12 times 12 is. Ally shouted out 144. I asked them what 12 squared is and Ally’s eyes got really big because he didn’t know. Not but a few seconds later, and Freud shouted 144! I said it was right and he repeated, “I’M A MATH MACHINE!”. These kids are hilarious!
